Dental prophylaxis scaling, professional brushing and airflow
Dental prophylaxis covers the procedures that remove tartar and plaque to keep your teeth and gums healthy. At Studio de Zâmbete, every prophylaxis session starts with an assessment of your teeth and gums.
Professional cleaning helps prevent cavities, gum inflammation and periodontal disease, and complements your brushing at home.
What a prophylaxis session may include
- Ultrasonic scaling – removing tartar from the tooth surfaces and below the gum line
- Professional brushing – polishing the tooth surfaces after scaling
- Airflow – removing stains and deposits with a fine jet of water, air and powder
- Fluoride treatment – applying a fluoride product to strengthen the enamel, when recommended by the doctor
- Personalised advice on brushing, flossing and interdental brushes
How often prophylaxis is recommended
For most patients, dentists recommend a check-up and a cleaning session every 6 months. The frequency may differ for patients with periodontal disease, braces or dental prosthetics and is decided by the doctor.

Frequently asked questions
Does scaling hurt?
Scaling is usually not painful. You may feel slight sensitivity, especially if your gums are inflamed. The doctor can use a local anaesthetic gel when needed.
Does scaling damage tooth enamel?
No. Scaling removes tartar deposits, not enamel. Done correctly, it is a safe procedure, recommended periodically for healthy teeth and gums.
What is the difference between scaling, professional brushing and airflow?
Scaling removes tartar, professional brushing polishes the tooth surfaces and airflow removes stains and plaque from hard-to-reach areas. The doctor decides which procedures are right for you.
The information on this page is general and does not replace a consultation. The treatment plan is decided by the doctor after an examination.
