Endodontics root canal treatment
Endodontics treats the dental pulp, commonly known as the “nerve” of the tooth. Root canal treatment becomes necessary when the pulp is inflamed or infected, for example because of a deep cavity or a fracture.
Root canal treatment allows the tooth to be saved instead of extracted.
When root canal treatment is needed
- Spontaneous toothache or pain that wakes you up at night
- Prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold
- Swelling of the gum or face (dental abscess)
- Pain when biting
- A tooth that has changed colour after an injury
How root canal treatment is done
- 1Examination and X-ray of the tooth
- 2Local anaesthesia
- 3Removal of the affected pulp
- 4Cleaning, shaping and disinfecting the root canals
- 5Sealing the canals (root canal filling)
- 6Restoring the tooth with a filling or, if needed, a crown
Technology we use
For root canal treatments we use an endomotor, which allows controlled cleaning and shaping of the root canals, and an apex locator, which electronically measures the length of the canal. Instruments are sterilised in an autoclave.

Frequently asked questions
Does root canal treatment hurt?
The treatment is done under local anaesthesia and its purpose is precisely to relieve pain. Slight, temporary sensitivity may occur afterwards.
How many sessions are needed?
The number of sessions depends on the complexity of the tooth and the degree of infection. The doctor will explain the stages after the assessment.
What happens to the tooth after root canal treatment?
The treated tooth must be properly restored. Depending on how much tooth structure remains, the doctor may recommend a filling, a post or a dental crown.
The information on this page is general and does not replace a consultation. The treatment plan is decided by the doctor after an examination.
